What Could Go Wrong?

On a day to day basis, heaters work wonderfully; piping in hot water and keeping you and your loved ones warm. But, for every evening that your heating system keeps you warm, a little more wear is placed on the parts in the boiler. So, the longer you go without having someone perform regular maintenance, the bigger the risk of a full blown breakdown at the worst possible time.

The two most commonly affected parts of the hydronic heating system that need maintenance are the water pumps and the boiler itself. Of course, if you have a modern pump or are about to replace your pump, maintenance will be reduced significantly as current pumps are crafted to remain quiet, efficient and self–maintained for 10–15 years. However, if you have an older pump, it is important to have it checked annually.

The boiler itself needs to be cleaned and checked yearly to remain fully functional as well. That annual maintenance includes checking the glycol levels in your flooring and outdoor heating tubes for low pH balance. If the acid inhibitors deteriorate, the glycol can start to have a severely negative impact on the entire system, leading to erosion and eventual breaking. For this reason, it’s necessary to flush of the entire system required every years, however most other maintenance is annual.

Each boiler will have manufacturer recommended maintenance cycles as well. These can be read in user manuals or on the documentation that came with your boiler, both accessible by our trained technicians. Other things that should be checked regularly include water pressure and the overall performance of the radiators and baseboards on a room by room basis.
