5 Silent Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair

Sometimes furnace sounds are obvious because you hear loud noises and know that something is going wrong. But other times, furnace problems are quieter and more difficult to discern. When this happens, you need to pay attention to other warning signs that something is wrong with your furnace.

Then give our team a call for heating repair in Auburn, WA. Even if you don’t know exactly what’s wrong with your furnace, our team can troubleshoot to get down to the root of the problem and fix it. You can also keep reading to learn about 5 silent signs that something is wrong with your furnace so that you know what to watch for.

Turning On and Off

Your furnace should turn on and off regularly for heating cycles. However, it should not turn on and off at too frequent intervals. If your furnace is turning on and off every 5 minutes, that’s a red flag that something is wrong with the unit.

The most likely cause is that a safety switch is being triggered inside the unit and causing it to shut down as a safety precaution. Once the safety concern is addressed, your furnace will begin to work again normally.

Burner Flame

You also want to pay attention to the burner flame if you have a gas furnace. The burner flame should always burn bright blue. Any other color means that something is wrong with the unit. A yellow flame is completely normal for other types of fires but not for a furnace pilot light. It could mean that there is too much carbon monoxide buildup in the heat exchanger, among other potential problems.

Rust and Corrosion

Every month or so, you should complete a visual inspection of your heater. If you begin to notice the signs of rust and corrosion, that can mean that there is moisture building up inside of your heater for some reason.

Rust and corrosion are dangerous because their effects cannot be reversed once they begin. Instead, whichever components of your furnace are rusting need to be replaced. If a major component like the heat exchanger is rusting, it can be a very expensive and involved replacement.

Increasing Utility Costs

If you notice that your utility costs are increasing without an explanation, you may be tempted to write it off as a fluke. You adjust your thermostat settings to save money and move on. But we encourage you to consider that something may be wrong with your heater.

If you haven’t set your thermostat settings higher for heating or used your heater more often than normal, chances are that something is going wrong inside of the unit. Whatever is happening is causing your heater to work harder to produce heating results. Maintenance is an opportunity to reverse these problems and help your heater to work at its most efficient without costing more for usage

Rodent Activity

If you’ve had a rodent problem in your home, you want to get your furnace checked out as part of addressing the concerns. Rodents can chew through wires, ductwork, and other furnace components. When they do, they can leave a lot of damage behind. Your heater may stop working completely, but if it doesn’t, it may have electrical shorts or other issues.
